Sven Hedin’s footsteps in Iran Central Desert The video is about a long desert trekking in Dasht-e Kavir desert and is made from different Adventure Iran desert trekking tours from 2011 to 2019. Unfortunately, we haven’t got much footage from our trips and the video was made from what we could get from these memorable trips. Sven Hedin is a Swedish geographer, topographer, explorer and travel writer who traveled to Iran in 1886 and 1890 and he passed this part of the desert with camels and camel mans so in the hour of his work we named one of our expedition trekking trips after him. The region is Khor and Biabanak which is located in the heart of Iran Central Desert, 400 km east of Isfahan. We designed a trek mostly travelable by camels that passes a number of oases and villages inside of the desert.You can see the remains of the date farms and some agricultural regions in the desert with some sheep and cows on the farms and of course some camels which are the main highlights of the desert. The trail is designed to pass different terrain types like flat desert, soft desert and sand dunes, Salt Lake and mountains. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to take this trek. March and April in spring are perfect as you have more daylight in the desert. In October and November, you have better temperature but the daylight is a couple of hours shorter than spring. You can start your journey from Yazd or Isfahan which are the most popular cities for travelers who visit Iran Classical Routes.

Lavasan City in Northeast Tehran Lavasan is a gorgeous town and the center of the Lavasanat district in Shemiranat county in the province of Tehran. Located 11 km northeast of the capital, it is the closest summer resort to Tehran city. In colloquial terms, this town is called Lavasoon. Lavasan means the ridge of sunrise or the ridge of the mountain from which the sun rises. The town of Lavasan is surrounded in the north by the mountains of Varjin, Baghdereh, Kand, and Afjeh, in the west by the Qasran Mountains, and in the northeast and east by the mountains of Ira, Phil Zamin, Lavasankooh, and Jajrud, and in the south by the mountains of Telo, Quchak, Zinkooh, and Arakooh. Lavasan is a summer valley with a pleasant climate on the southern slopes of the Alborz Mountains, which is famous for its pristine and beautiful landscapes, the Jajrud River, and the beautiful lake of Latian Dam. Latian Dam is located in the south of Lavasan, which went into operation in 1967. This concrete dam has an important role in providing water and electricity for Tehran. The name of this dam was Farahnaz before the revolution. Jajrud River, which originates from the heights of Darbandsar, Garmabdar, Igal, Zaygan, and the southern parts of Tochal (part of the Central Alborz Mountains), is the main catchment area of the dam. The unspoiled landscapes around this town depict nature as amazing as possible in all four seasons of the year. Shemshak Village Alborz Ski Region Shemshak village is one of the highest villages in Iran, situated in the heart of the Central Alborz Mountain, at 2,700 m altitude. It is only 65 km from the center of Tehran, about a 1 ½ hour drive to reach through a mountainous road. There is also a ski resort beside Shemshak village called Shemshak Ski resort. This ski resort is famous as it was the first to open in Iran in 1958, and is now the third largest ski resort in the country after Dizin and Darbandsar. Shemshak village is surrounded by numerous mountains above 3,000 m and 4,000 m, which makes the area ideal for hiking and mountain biking in Iran during spring, early summer, and summer. It is perfect for skiing in the winter. The 3,000m mountains are just right for easy and moderate hikes and are close to the village. For strenuous and challenging trekkers, the renowned mountains above 4,000 m. are perfect. There is a 15 Km mountain ridge above Shemshak village, stretching from Kolon Bastak (4,170m) in the west to Sarakchal (4,210m) in the east. Between the two peaks, there are even more mountains over 4,000m (Sarakchal 2 & Sarakchal 3), making this ridgeline very challenging. In the south, there is Mt Abak (3,520m) which is above Shemshak Ski Piste. If the weather is clear, you can view a number of Iran’s high mountains such as Kholeno (4,387m), Azadkuh (4,350m), Borj (4,326m), and the roof of Iran, Mt Damavand (5,610m). Dasht-e Havij in Iran Dasht-e-Havij or Gor Chal plain, at an altitude of 2,700 m, is situated 400 meters above Afjeh village in Iran. It is one of the most famous attractions in the Lavasanat district (northeast of Tehran in the central Alborz Mountains). Havij means Carrot and Dasht-e Havij means literally a ‘big carrot field’. There are various legends about this name’s origin, which probably indicate that large parts of this vast land were sown with carrot seeds. Today, there is no sign of anything left to reinforce it. Gor Chal in ancient Persian means fireplace, being the combination of two words; Gor means fire and Chal means place. It is said that it got its name for it being so hot compared to the surrounding places being so cold, but there is no evidence to support this assertion. Dasht-e Havij is surrounded by a cluster of high-altitude peaks between 3,000 – 4,000 m which protects this area from the wind. During the Safavid dynasty (400 years ago), it was an important hunting area with some beautiful cascades called Passchoobak, Saboosetan, and Charand. A couple is still in existence, depending very much on the snowfall of that year. In addition, there are numerous maple trees and, of course, a variety of fruit trees in this unspoiled region. The remains of Safavid Caravansaries can be seen along the path at the end of the valley, near the rock wall. There is also an old bath dating back to the Safavid era which is, surprisingly, still in use and is presently enjoyed by rural people. The Qajar dynasty (200 years ago) used this path to reach the Lar National Park going through the countryside. From Lar, there was an ancient mule road stretching towards the Caspian Sea. 3 Peaks in

Azad Kuh Mountain Azad Kuh Mountain, with a giant rocky summit, is one of the highest peaks in Iran and is located in the high central Alborz mountains. Azad means ‘free’ and Kuh means ‘mountain’. The free mountain might be the local name, due to it being cone-shaped, so dissimilar from the other surrounding mountains. If you assume a line from Tehran city to the north, in the direction of “Noshahr city”, Azad Kuh is located somewhere in the middle. The three faces of the summit, north, east, and west, are surrounded by steep rocky walls that are more than 500 meters tall. In the summer, there is no need to use any technical equipment for climbing. The mountain is located in the Alborz Markazi protected area where there are different types of flora and fauna, various species of birds, and a broad range of wildlife. MT. Iran is a vast country with two huge deserts, where even from the desert area it is possible to see these staggeringly beautiful 4,000 m mountains in the distance. There are also a lot of hiking routes in the country. As you may know, there are two long mountain ranges in Iran. Alborz mountain range with around 900 km length to the south of the Caspian Sea and Zagros Mountain Range with 1,500 km length starting from the northeast of the country and stretching to the southeast. There are also numerous high mountains over 4,000 m in other parts of the country for hiking. Most travelers from all around the world come here for hiking, with Iran hiking becoming the most popular activity for many adventurers. You cannot find an IRAN HIKING MAP here as the one you may see in your home country. There are a few organizations and companies that print Iran maps, but, unfortunately, they do not provide a special Iran hiking map for our mountains, or a topographic hiking map with contours and nature signs. On the north side of the capital city of Tehran, there are a number of hiking routes that go up to Tochal Mountain, where the long ridge line is nearly 4,000 m. There are plenty of characteristic cafés and shops around here where hikers have the opportunity to stop and have breakfast on the trail and take in the stunning scenery.
