Dena Protected Area Introduction Dena Protected Area is one of Iran’s most preserved environmental regions managed by the Iranian Environmental Organization. There’s also a special ecodiverse zone inside this protected area called Dena National Park. The park was registered on the list of biosphere reserved regions of UNESCO in 2010. Dena Protected Area is nestled in the Dena Mountain Chain, one of the longest chains of the Zagros Range. Dena location and how to reach it Dena Protected Area, situated in the south-west of Iran, is approximately north of Shiraz province. This protected area with 255,537.00 ha (2555 square kilometres) is located in the two provinces of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad and Isfahan. It’s about a 2.5-hour drive of 200 km from Shiraz city on a beautiful mountain road. You can also reach Dena from the north of Isfahan city, a drive of about 310 km taking about 4.5 hours and passing through a network of tunnels. Dena Geographical specification Dena Protected Area is situated in a specific geographical location of the Zagros Mountain range which has different terrains. The lowest part of the Dena Protected Area is located in the agricultural area and starts at an altitude of 1300 m. The land goes up to an upper altitude reaching the forest close to the Dena Mountain foothills. This region has an altitude between 1800m to 2500 m covered mostly with oak trees with a wide range of flora and fauna. The upper part of Dena protected land is a mountainous region which is above 3000 m. In this area you will find a lot of canyons, waterfalls, and glaciers, making it an exceptional place for wildlife. Jahan Nama Protected Area A small village of Jahan Nama by the Caspian Sea gave the name to the vast Jahan Nama Protected Area in the Golestan Province in Iran. With rich wildlife, including wild sheep and goats, wolfs, panthers, bears, weasels, owls, eagles, cuckoos, woodpeckers, and porcupines, Jahan Nama is also famous for its variety of plants and trees, including barberry, Sorkhdar, Kolah-e Mir Hassan, Bolandmaza Namdar, Borage Cowslip, Ras, Darmaneh, and many others. During the studies performed here between 1999 and 2008, 1,350 species were identified, including 607 vascular plant species from 85 families. There are also many seasonal birds in the park and a lot of rivers and springs. The highlands of Jahannama are the most suitable habitats for various hunting birds such as the golden eagles, as well as large partridges. Jahan Nama Park, with an area of about 38 ha, is the largest protected area in Mazandaran province, after Golestan National Park. It is part of the Hyrcanian forests (UNESCO), which are among the oldest forests in the world. The beauties and attractions of the Jahan Nama region are not only limited to its rich flora and fauna and intact nature. The 35-meter Radkan Tower, also known as Mil Radkan, is one of the main historical attractions in this area. It is a cylindrical brick tower dating back to the 13th century. Ziarat Waterfall is another natural attraction in the northeast of the region, located about 5km from Ziarat Village. The village is one of the most beautiful tourist villages in Iran. Alborz-e Markazi Protected Area Alborz-e Markazi Protected Area is one of the biggest protected areas in Alborz Mountain Range observed by the Department of Environment of Iran. The area starts north of Tehran city and stretches to the Caspian Sea. It is situated in three provinces of Tehran, Alborz, and Mazandaran. The whole area is around 400,000 hectares and is home to 48 species of mammals, 156 species of birds, 1,400 different species of plants, and 26 species of reptiles who live in this area. It is one of the main sources of water as there are many rivers in this region. The most famous mountains of Central Alborz, above 4,000m, are located in this protected area. Mount AzadKuh 4,400m, Mount Kolonbastak 4,150 m, and Mount Sarakchal 4,250m are its most famous peaks. In addition, Abali Ski resort, the first ski resort in Iran, built around 60 years ago (1960), is located in Alborz-e Markazi protected area. The main ski resorts of Dizin, Shemshak, and Darbandsar are also found here.
