Dasht-e Kavir Desert (Central desert of Iran) Dasht-e Kavir, larger than the Lut desert, is one of two Iranian deserts situated in the middle of the Iranian plateau, and located southeast of Alburz Mountains. It is about 300 kilometers from the east and southeast of Tehran. Iran is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, and among them, Dasht-e Kavir, also known as the Great Salt Desert, stands out as one of the most remarkable natural wonders. Covering an area of approximately 77,600 square kilometers, this vast and mesmerizing desert lies in the heart of Iran, stretching across multiple provinces including Semnan, Isfahan, Khorasan, Yazd, and Tehran. There are a couple of protected areas inside the desert supervised by the Department of the Environment; and likened to a Kavir National Park (Park-e Melli Kavir). Kavir National Park is one of them with numerous wild animals. Dasht-e Kavir, the other, is also known as Iran Central Desert, Kavir-e Markazi Iran, Kavire Namak, and the Great Salt Desert. This area has a view of salt hills which were formed when the underground salt layers tried to emerge through the mud and rocks. The area is perilous because anyone falling in to a salt hill may get stuck and unable to escape. Due to this, the land is unpopulated with the exception of the mountainous regions. This desert, nearly 800km long and 320km wide, consists of mud and saltmarsh (kavirs). Way back in time this land was covered by an ocean rich in salt that surrounded a small part of the continent in what is currently central Iran. Kavir National Park Dasht-e Kavir Desert Kavir National Park is part of Dasht-e Kavir Desert, the biggest desert in Iran. It is a specifically protected area located in the south-east of Tehran province and east of the two cities of Qom and Kashan. It is also situated in the west of the Dasht-e Kavir Desert. The distance from Tehran is 120 kilometres. Mount Siahkuh, (Black Mountain), is a large, semi-circular rock outcropping located roughly in the park's centre. The Iran Environmental Organization protects the wildlife and seasonal birds that live around this mountain. The famous Asiatic cheetah, Persian zebra, mountain wild goat, jackal, desert fox, hyena, wild cat and panther are registered on the park wildlife list. Eagle, pheasant, flamingo, geese and crane are just some of the birds inhabiting this national park. Also, the area has valuable flora and fauna reserves. Kavir National Park was on the route of the Ancient Silk Road made famous in the books of the renowned travel writers, Alfons Gabriel and Sven Hedin. Centuries ago, it was the route of caravans and merchants who crossed this part of the desert for trading. Still in existence are a couple of the crucial caravanserais inside this national park. Shah Abbasi caravanserai, (Gasre Bahram), is one of them that has been renovated and used as temporary accommodation. Mount Damavand Iran's Highest Moutain (5610m) Mount Damavand is the highest mountain in Iran and the whole Middle East. It is also the highest volcanic cone-shaped peak in Asia. Located 104km northeast of Tehran in the Central Alborz Mountains, thanks to its volcanic nature Damavand and its surrounding area are rich in hot and cold springs. Large sections of the mountain’s slopes are covered with sulphur, which explains the sulphur odour. There are also glaciers, waterfalls and geysers. The peak of Damavand covers permanently snow during the entire year. The most important thermal springs are Ask and Larijan. The Flora and Fauna is very rich and include about 2000 plant species. There are numerous endemic species which are important to Flora of world. There are 16 recognized routes for ascending the Damavand peak and many accounts and stories from many those who have reached the summit. The mountain itself is subject of many mythical and folkloric tales. Damavand slopes are most beautiful in the spring and the views from the top are breathtaking, the Caspian Sea to the north, the Lar Lake and the sprawling city of Tehran to the west and vast Dasht-e Kavir desert to the south. Dasht-e Lut Desert Introduction of Lut Desert The Lut Desert also called Kavir-e Lut, or Dasht-e-Lut Desert is the second desert of Iran in terms of vastness, and is located in the southeast of the country. It is the world's 27th largest desert, and was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List on July 17, 2016. It stretches about 480 kilometers (300 mi) long and 320 kilometers (200 mi) wide. A huge mass of dunes and sand rises in the east, while in the west an extensive area of high ridges is separated by wind-swept corridors. At its lowest salt-filled depression, less than 1,000 feet (300 meters) above sea level, the summer heat and low humidity are believed to be unsurpassed on the planet. Between June and October, this arid subtropical area is swept by strong winds, which transport sediment and cause aeolian erosion on a colossal scale. Consequently, the site presents some of the most spectacular examples of aeolian yardang landforms (massive corrugated ridges). Gandom Beryan in Lut Desert It also contains extensive stony deserts and dune fields. The property represents an exceptional example of ongoing geological processes. NASA research results suggest that Gandom Beryan in the Lut Desert is one of the hottest places on Earth. According to satellite data from NASA in 2005, a surface temperature of 70.7 degrees Celsius was recorded here. This temperature is the highest temperature ever recorded by satellite from the surface of planet Earth. That’s why it’s called the ‘2005 point’. Mountain Biking in Iran Mountain Biking in Iran is a new activity for adventure travelers who come from all around the world. Iran is really an ideal mountain biking destination, but, unfortunately, it is not yet covered in the press and media. There are many Mountain Biking clubs, and over the past ten years, this challenge has appealed to a lot of women. Mountain Biking is not a popular activity as it is in some countries in Europe; there is not an exclusive cycling path in the streets of Iran. The mountains offer a lot of good trails and single-track roads which are proper for MTB freaks. There are a lot of dirt roads in our deserts between the villages and also single trails between oases which are perfect for this sport. We also have very decent roads with good quality asphalt in most parts of the country. As Iran is a mountainous country the roads are not flat so you will experience a lot of ascent and descent in most of them. We have created a wide range of mountain biking Iran tours from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea. Dena National Park Dena National Park, with an approximate area of 250,000 hectares, is located in the middle of the Zagros mountain range covering the whole Dena mountain chain as explained in another article. Dena National Park is located in Dena Protected Area that is conserved by the Iranian Department of the Environment. The central part of Dena National Park was registered in 2010 on the UNESCO list as a Biosphere Reserve site. A biosphere reserve is an ecosystem with unusual plants and animals with scientific and natural interests. It is a label given by UNESCO to help preserve this remarkable region. The core area of the park is around 35,000 hectares, a large expanse indeed. The Dena region possesses an extensive number of plants, various native mammals seriously at risk of extinction, and different types of natural resources. Almond and pistachio trees can be seen mostly in the low-lying areas, whereas oak trees stand on elevated regions. Walnut, hackberry, and pear trees are also spread all over this spectacular area. This district has long been a protected habitat for many animals such as brown bears, wild goats, eagles, wolves, various wild cats including Caracas, lynxes, and leopards. In addition, many vast rivers namely the Dez, Karun, and Karkheh originate from this region where they flow into the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. Picturesque falls, lakes, and pools make this mountainous area even more remarkably striking. In this geographical area, a significant number of individuals live a nomadic lifestyle. Dena Mountain Chain Dena mountain chain is the name of sub-range mountains located in the middle of the Zagros mountain range of Iran. It is around 90 km long with an average 15 km width. Most parts of this chain reach nearly 3,000 meters in height with a spectacular view of the whole region. They are home to some of the highest mountains in the entire Zagros range with more than 40 peaks rising to an elevation of 4,000 meters or more above sea level. One of these, the stunning Ghash Mastaan (Bijan 3), is the highest peak of all, with an elevation of 4,450 meters. There are two starting points to ascend the main peaks: The first one is the easiest and the most popular. It starts from Sisakht, the town on the southern west side of Dena. There is a delightful trail that leads you to the shelter and the main peaks above 4000m. The second accessible way to the peaks is called the Northern route. It starts from Khafr village in the lowlands of Dena. If your goal is to just climb the highest peak, (Ghash Mastan), this is the shortest way to do it. Also, on both sides of the mountain there is a shelter above 3000 m which is convenient to stop for refreshments before ascending the peak.
