Northern Tehran is located on Central Alborz Mountains. Sarakchal is one of the highest summits in the region with 4210m altitude from sea level. The closest village to this summit is Shemshak. This village is at 40 km north of Tehran and 60 km to Tehran central areas. The village is trekking start point to Sarakchal and its altitude is 2700 m. Shemshak is famous as it was the first ski resort in Iran opened in 1958 and still is the third largest ski area after Dizin and Darbansar.

There is a 15 Km length ridgeline over Shemshak from west to east starting from Koloon Bastak (4170m) in the west and ending at Sarakchal (4210m) in the east. Between the two there are some mountains over 4000m (Sarakchal 2 & Sarakchal 3) making this ridgeline so challenging. In the south, there are Paynesum (3350m) and Abak (3520m) summits. If the weather is clear you will view Kholeno (4387m), Azadkuh (4350m) and Borj (4326m) mountains as well as Damavand (5610m), the roof of Iran.

This trip has been designed for professional hikers who have enough experience in high altitude mountains and high fitness level. It is an intensive hike on a 15 km ridgeline over 4000m. On the first day you will be transferred to Shemshak village at 2700m height from sea level for acclimatization purposes. You will stay in a local house. This altitude will prepare you physically and mentally for tomorrow’s climbing.
The day after we will drive up to 3300m by car and from there (base camp of Kolon Bastak) we will ascend to the peak at 4156m. From the peak we will continue trekking on the ridgeline from west to east passing 3 peaks of Sarakchal 3 (4124m), Sarakchal 2 (4152m) and Sarakchal 1 (4210m). Total length of hiking is around 20 km of which 15 km is between two mountains. After the last peak we will descend to Shemshak village to complete our journey. Total climbing time will be between 10-12 hours.

Day 1: Tehran to Shemshak village

Pick you up from your hotel in Tehran at 5.00 p.m. to drive towards Shemshak village through a mountainous road. Overnight stay in the village house for acclimatization. (D)1

Day 2: Ascending Mt. Koloon Bastak (4125 m) & Sarak Chal (4210 m)

wake up early at 5.00 a.m. After breakfast we will drive half an hour to trekking start point (3300m); trekking approximately 3-4 hours towards Koloon Bastak summit, then continue a long trekking on the ridgeline to pass 3 peaks; Sarakchal 3 (4124m), Sarakchal 2 (4152 m) and Sarakchal 1 (4210 m). Then climb down to Shemshak village to return to Tehran. (B, L)
