This new tour, that we in Adventure Iran have recently put together, offers a great opportunity for first-time visitors to Iran to get acquainted with the country, its history and geography. The programme includes a visit to Iran’s main attractions in historical cities as well as a few days of hiking in the mountains and in the desert. The best and most pleasant season to do the tour is spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and gently cool. The degree of difficulty is moderate and the program that we have created is suitable for novice fit travelers. The tour starts in southern Iran, in Shiraz, the city of poets and Persian gardens, and ends in the north at the foothills of Alborz Mountains, in Tehran, the bustling and spectacular capital of Iran. The cultural/historical part of the tour takes you via Iran’s main highlights, namely the cities of Shiraz, Yazd, Esfahan, Kashan, Abyaneh and Tehran, as well as the country’s main UNESCO World Heritage Sites en route. You will also have an opportunity to learn about the history of the cities themselves on a city tour with a local guide. The hiking part of the tour covers two different regions in central Iran – Dena Mountain Range in the Zagros Mountains and the Dasht-e Kavir Desert. The planned two-day hike off the beaten track goes through the UNESCO-listed Dena Biosphere Reserve and includes a hike through mountain villages and overnight stay within the National Park itself. In the desert, we will do off-road driving and hike to the Salt Lake and sand dunes. Here, we will overnight in a beautiful renovated caravanserai in the middle of the desert and the following day continue on towards the historical village of Abyaneh. As the tour spans across different weather and climate conditions, be prepared for the temperatures in the mountains and the desert to differ significantly. If doing the same trip in the summer, we skip the desert and spend more time hiking in the mountains.

The forest cover is oak dominated. It is also home to rich and complex flora.
Dena is a protected area because of its vast range of plants, several endangered endemic mammals and natural resources. Oak species dominate the highlands, while wild pistachio and almond plants are common at lower elevations. Hackberry, walnut, and pear trees are scattered throughout this eco-region. A variety of animal life, such as brown bear, eagles, wolves, various wild cats including caracals, lynxes and leopards, and wild goat have long made their homes in the region. Dena is home to a vast range of plant species and several endangered and endemic mammal species. On the other hand many large rivers, including Karun, Dez, and Karkheh originate from this area flowing into the Persian Gulf. Scenic waterfalls, pools, and lakes add beauty to the mountainous landscape.
The central part of Dena (Dena National Park) was registered by UNESCO on their list of Biosphere Reserve sites. A biosphere reserve is an ecosystem with plants and animals of unusual scientific and natural interest. It is a label given by UNESCO to help protect the sites in the world.
Up to the present time, the vast majority of people living in the area practice a nomadic lifestyle.
The cultural diversity of the local communities, including the nomad communities are manifested by their languages, traditional production activities, herding, food products, dresses, festivals and dances.
Lar National Park is a protected area around the massive Mt Damavand (5610 m) including a number of impressive 4000m+ peaks; all located in Central Alborz mountain range. It is in two provinces of Tehran and Mazandaran. Lar is a high altitude mountainous ecosystem only 70 km north east of the capital.
The Park is around 30,000 hectares in size. There are no residential areas in or around it. During the summer when the national park opens for local herdsmen, you will see semi nomadic shepherds from the warmer regions further south take their herds to graze in the summer months. You may also see some a variety of tribes making KOOCH (move to high altitude and cooler places in the hot season) in the park territory. Different species live in this park such as birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and aquatics (brown bear, viper, partridge, gamma and red-spotted trout). This area is also utilized by beekeepers due to the abundance of a variety of wild flowers. The park opens strictly from May to Mid- August and then is closed to the public. The best time to visit is beginning of May to the end of June when the land is covered with wild flowers. Visitors need entrance permit. We will obtain the permits for our guests. Since it is a bureaucratic and time consuming procedure we need sufficient time so there will be no delays.
