This tour is an Active/Cultural journey suitable for first time travelers, who are interested in combining an adventurous activity with visiting Iran’s major cultural and historical sites. This trip covers three different regions for trekking in central Iran. Dena mountain chain and Bakhtiari nomadic region in Zagros Mountains and Dashte Kavir Desert. During summer months we switch the desert part with hiking in Lar National Park in Central Alborz Mountains. For the cultural/historical part of the trip you will visit Iran’s famous cities of Shiraz, Yazd, Isfahan, Kashan and Tehran. For each city we include a walking city tour that includes the main attractions of each city. In the mountainous parts, you will begin hiking in the foothills of Dena located in the southern tail of Zagros. Then you will have a short trek in the Zardkooh chain which offer a different landscape and geological formations. This area is also nomadic tribal territory. We then move into the desert and excursions in Dasht-e Kavir. Accommodation is in a renovated caravanserai and the night sky is truly breathtaking. The season for this particular desert option is from March to Mid-May and from Mid-September to Mid-November. During the summer we run the other option of taking you to Lar National Park. This option runs from Mid-May till mid-September. So the journey will start from Shiraz and finish in the capital city of Tehran.
As this is a group tour for combined multi-activity, we have designed it so that it requires a moderate level of difficulty. This enables most travelers with regular fitness levels to join and enjoy this exceptional journey. Nevertheless we can customize this tour according to the requests of tour companies or independent groups.

In Persepolis we start a full sightseeing of Persia’s imperial past by visiting Naghshe-Rajab and Nagshe-Rostam. In the late afternoon we will drive back to Shiraz. Overnight stay at hotel
In the morning we will start a walking tour to visit Karim khan citadel, Vakil mosque & baths, Nasirolmolk mosque, the grand bazaar and the old part of the town. In the afternoon we will visit Hafez mausoleum Persia’s beloved poet and Eram garden registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Late afternoon we will leave Shiraz towards Sisakht situated right next to Dena Mountains, a 216 km journey. Overnight stay in a traditional guesthouse.
After breakfast start your long day trekking through the national park. The altitude of the starting point is 2500m. More or less we will traverse around 15 km per day taking us to the central part of the region. Dinner in camp (or local house).
Second day walk is approximately 17 km walking through forest and mountain foothills. Today we will visit a waterfall which is the highest waterfall in Dena region.
After breakfast you will drive to Yazd which it takes about 5 hours and half. En route you will visit “Abar Kooh” the location for a 4000 year old Cedar. It has been said that the tree was planted by Zarathustra the ancient Persian prophet. Then we drive to Yazd to have a half day sightseeing tour visiting its touristic attractions such as Zoroastrian sites of Dakhmeh (old cemetery & tower of silence), the fire temple, Amir Chakhmagh complex and the main Grand Mosque next to bazaar.
After breakfast, we will visit the rest of the attractions of Yazd and then a short drive to the historical city of Meybod. In Meybod there is an old historical mud-brick fort called Narin Castle (Narin Qal'eh) around one thousand years old. After Meybod we will drive to historical city of Nain. Then we will visit one of the oldest mosques in Iran. Also there is an interesting museum of Anthropology to spend time in. Overnight stay in Kuhpayeh Caravanserai.
After breakfast, we will visit some sites in Varzaneh area. On the route we will visit Ghurtan Citadel, an 1100 year old structure, registered as a National heritage site. We will continue our journey to Gaav-Chah, Asiab Shotor, both about 300 years old. In the late afternoon we will drive to Isfahan. Overnight stay in hotel.
A full day Esfahan city walking tour to visit all of UNESCO’s world heritage sites in Naqshe Jahan Square, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Imam Mosque as well as Aali Qapu Palace, Chehel Sotun (Forty Pillars) and Hasht Behest (Eight Heaven) building on this day. Overnight stay at hotel.
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and continue Isfahan city tour by visiting the remaining attractions such as two of Iran’s historic bridges of Sio-se Pol (33 Bridge), and Pole Khajoo (Khajoo Bridge). In addition the Armenian Eastern Orthodox Vank Church. Then we drive to the historical village of Sar-Agha Seyyed. Overnight stay at local house
After early morning breakfast we will start the trek through a canyon, and then up a valley. As you trek you will be able to observe the Bakhtiari nomads life style. Drive to Chelgerd for overnight accommodation in hotel
A drive to Kashan while visiting the extremely unique and special village of Abianeh. It takes about 5 hours to get to Kashan. Overnight stay at hotel
After breakfast, you will have a half day Kashan city tour. Visit a couple of historical houses as well as Agha-bozorg old mosque and the Grand Bazaar. We will visit Fin garden and bath before leaving the city. Fin garden is one of the Persian gardens on the UNESCO world heritage list. Afterward we will drive to Tehran. Overnight stay in a hotel.
After breakfast there will be a Tehran sightseeing and city tour. It will be a walking tour and we will visit all the important sites. Golestan Palace world heritage site, Iran anthropology museum and the Grand Bazaar are the sites this afternoon. In the evening drive to Tehran International Airport for departure flight.
Zagros is one of the longest mountain ranges in Asia and it forms the largest chain in Iran, spreading across the whole length of the western and southwestern Iranian plateau, beginning in northwestern Iran and ending at Strait of Hormuz. Zagros range is about 932 miles (1500 km) long and more than 150 miles (240 km) wide. The mountains are separated into many sub-ranges. Geologically it is about the same age as the Alps. The forest cover is oak dominated. It is also home to rich and complex flora.
Dena is a protected area because of its vast range of plants, several endangered endemic mammals and natural resources. Oak species dominate the highlands, while wild pistachio and almond plants are common at lower elevations. Hackberry, walnut, and pear trees are scattered throughout this eco-region. A variety of animal life, such as brown bear, eagles, wolves, various wild cats including caracals, lynxes and leopards, and wild goat have long made their homes in the region. Dena is home to a vast range of plant species and several endangered and endemic mammal species. On the other hand many large rivers, including Karun, Dez, and Karkheh originate from this area flowing into the Persian Gulf. Scenic waterfalls, pools, and lakes add beauty to the mountainous landscape.
The central part of Dena (Dena National Park) was registered by UNESCO on their list of Biosphere Reserve sites. A biosphere reserve is an ecosystem with plants and animals of unusual scientific and natural interest. It is a label given by UNESCO to help protect the sites in the world.
Up to the present time, the vast majority of people living in the area practice a nomadic lifestyle.
The cultural diversity of the local communities, including the nomad communities are manifested by their languages, traditional production activities, herding, food products, dresses, festivals and dances.
Lar National Park is a protected area around the massive Mt Damavand (5610 m) including a number of impressive 4000m+ peaks; all located in Central Alborz mountain range. It is in two provinces of Tehran and Mazandaran. Lar is a high altitude mountainous ecosystem only 70 km north east of the capital.
The Park is around 30,000 hectares in size. There are no residential areas in or around it. During the summer when the national park opens for local herdsmen, you will see semi nomadic shepherds from the warmer regions further south take their herds to graze in the summer months. You may also see some a variety of tribes making KOOCH (move to high altitude and cooler places in the hot season) in the park territory. Different species live in this park such as birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and aquatics (brown bear, viper, partridge, gamma and red-spotted trout). This area is also utilized by beekeepers due to the abundance of a variety of wild flowers. The park opens strictly from May to Mid- August and then is closed to the public. The best time to visit is beginning of May to the end of June when the land is covered with wild flowers. Visitors need entrance permit. We will obtain the permits for our guests. Since it is a bureaucratic and time consuming procedure we need sufficient time so there will be no delays.
Dena is the name for a sub-range within the Zagros Mountains. Dena is in the middle part of Zagros with 90 km length and 15 km average width which is the main important sub range of Zagros Mountains. Dena Mountains are the home of some of the highest mountains in the entire Zagros with more than 40 peaks rising to elevations of 4000 meters or more above sea level. Ghach Mastan in Dena is the highest peak in Zagros with an elevation of 4,450 meters.
This vast area with its beauties is ideal for many adventure activities like mountaineering, trekking and mountain biking. In addition there is also the possibility of the extremely exotic chance of observing tribal nomadic life styles.
